What we love about our home! (and why you should buy it)

 

1.  The location is truly fantastic.  If you work downtown, you can laugh at all your colleagues who have to slog in from the suburbs every day.  It is super convenient to the interstate, but it’s not so close you get the noise from it.  Everything downtown and lots of top restaurants on Virginia Avenue are within walking distance.  The Red Line is coming in, which will provide a public transit option with a stop just over a block away.  During snowstorms, Fletcher is a top priority street for plowing, which means you don’t get snowbound. 

 

2.  If you are into history, this neighborhood is full of it.  Many of the neighbors have a great appreciation of the history both of their homes and the area and can tell you who owned their home in the 19th century.  Several are antique collectors and/or renovate their homes in period styles.  This house was once owned by James Irving Dissette, after whom Irvington is named.  (The portion of Park St. that runs alongside the house was also once known as Irving Street.)

 

3.  Speaking of the neighbors, we know many of them, and they are good friends.  Fletcher Place has a strong, tight-knit neighborhood association which we would recommend joining.  We all look out for each other in person and over Nextdoor.

 

4.  Original features.  Assuming the staircase has been used 5-10 times per day for the last 145 years, it has probably been walked on literally a million times – and looks almost as good as new!  If you look closely at the treads, on some of them you can see doubled-up growth rings in the wood, which reflect the “year without a summer” of 1816 that resulted from the eruption of Tambora.  Counting back from there, some of the wood in the staircase probably grew in the 1750s or earlier.  The house is framed in true-dimension old-growth wood.  Good luck finding any of that in Carmel!

 

5.  Plenty of space, and flexible space.  The (original!) pocket doors give you lots of options for the first floor.  The room we call the “map room” (for obvious reasons) is a great living space convenient to the bedrooms.  The master suite is quite comfortable.  The pull-down ladder makes attic access a breeze, and is very popular with contractors who work up there!

We work downtown and want to send our daughter to a private school on the north side, and decided one commute per day was better than two.
